Nicholas Shane Johnson, a 17-year-old male from Asheboro, NC, tragically passed away on March 22, 2021. Nicholas was born on November 16, 2003, and grew up in Asheboro, where he attended Lindley Park Elementary School and was a student at Asheboro High School. He had a passion for drawing and art, and he loved sports, especially basketball. Nicholas was also a member of an all-boys choir for most of his young life.
On the night of March 22, 2021, Nicholas was found shot in the area of
Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Loach Street in Asheboro. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Asheboro Police Department believes that the shooting was a targeted act of retaliation for a previous shooting that occurred on the night of March 21, 2021. In that earlier incident, a 22-year-old man was seriously injured, and a 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the shooting. Although Nicholas was not suspected of any criminal involvement in the March 21 shooting, he was present at the scene.
The investigation into Nicholas's death is ongoing, and the Asheboro Police Department has not released any information about a possible suspect in the case. This incident marked the fourth homicide in the area that year, prompting the police to reallocate officers and resources to address the rising violence.
