On the night of April 9, 2018, Griffin Weathers was fatally shot during a drug deal over marijuana at the Laurel Springs apartments on Turtle Rock Way in High Point. According to police reports, Griffin was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The investigation revealed that Griffin had met with Tylar J. Harris, a 17-year-old male, to sell marijuana. During the transaction, a fight broke out between the two teens, and Harris allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Griffin once in the chest.
Tylar J. Harris was arrested at his home in the same apartment complex about four hours after the incident. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Harris's home, where they found three guns and other items of evidence. Harris was charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court the following day. During the court hearing, Harris claimed that Griffin had punched him twice before he pulled out the gun and shot him. Harris's mother and family members were present in court, expressing their support for him. Harris was held in the Guilford County Detention Center without bond until his next court hearing on June 15.
