Justin L. Williams, a 32-year-old African American male, was tragically found dead on September 24, 2018, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when police responded to a report of a shooting on the 6300 block of Raeford Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a wrecked 2001 Chevrolet on Bingham Drive, between Arberdale and McDougal drives, approximately 35 yards south of Raeford Road.
Inside the vehicle, officers found Williams, who was in the driver's seat, and a 14-month-old child. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, while the child was in good condition.
The investigation revealed that Williams had been fatally shot, leading to the issuance of warrants for Lavaris Davarian Speight, a 20-year-old male from Wilson, North Carolina. Speight was considered armed and dangerous and was accused of first-degree murder, assault in the presence of a minor, and two counts each of second-degree kidnapping and shooting into an occupied vehicle. The police urged anyone with information on Speight's whereabouts to contact Detective W. Lee or Crimestoppers.
On September 28, 2018, Speight turned himself in to authorities. He was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, and assault in the presence of a minor. Speight was held at the Wilson County Jail and awaited transfer to the Cumberland County Detention Center. The case was being investigated as a homicide, and Crime Stoppers offered a reward for information leading to an arrest.
