Paula Jo Furr, a 54-year-old woman from Albemarle, North Carolina, passed away on July 25, 2019. Paula, who was born on May 25, 1965, was an employee of Walmart for 30 years. She was the daughter of the late Donnie Dewey Furr and Margaret Elaine Furr. Paula is survived by her son, Cameron Cagle, also of Albemarle. Her death was part of a tragic incident that shocked the local community.
The Stanly County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a possible prowler knocking on the door of
a home on Canton Road. Upon arrival, deputies found Cameron Cagle, a 24-year-old man, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Cameron informed the deputies that his grandfather, Donnie D. Furr, had shot him at their house across the street. He also mentioned hearing a total of four gunshots. Cameron was transported to Carolinas Medical Center – Northeast, where he was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
Investigators entered the home and discovered the bodies of Donnie Dewey Furr, 74, Elaine Burleson Furr, 76, and Paula Jo Furr, 54. The investigation revealed that Donnie D. Furr was responsible for the deaths of his wife, Elaine, and daughter, Paula, before taking his own life. The incident was determined to be a double murder-suicide. The family had no history of violence or prior domestic issues, making the tragedy even more unexpected and heartbreaking.
The Stanly County Sheriff, Jeff Crisco, commended his officers for their handling of the situation, stating that they treated it in the most professional manner possible. The community mourned the loss of Paula Jo Furr and her family members, as they tried to come to terms with the senseless act of violence that took their lives.
