Ernest Cameron, a 23-year-old Black man, was a resident of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who was remembered by his family as the backbone of their lives. A community activist who spoke on their behalf described Ernest as “a person of love, peace and happiness” who loved life and riding dirt bikes. His family was left heartbroken by his sudden and violent death.
On the afternoon of August 23, 2019, Ernest was sitting in his car at the intersection of South Main Street and Silas Creek
Parkway. Also in the vehicle were his son and his son’s mother. Suddenly, another vehicle pulled up and multiple shots were fired into Ernest’s car at close range. He was struck by the gunfire and rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The woman and toddler in the car with him were not physically injured. Police said the suspect vehicle was last seen traveling west from the area.
During the course of the investigation, Winston-Salem police identified De'Edward Devon Glenn, then 24, as a suspect. He was first arrested on drug-related offenses and three counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and was held on a $1.5 million bail. On September 9, 2019, authorities charged Glenn with murder, and he was subsequently held without bail. His sister, Naketa Glenn, then 31, was also charged with felony obstruction of justice in relation to the homicide investigation and received a $2,500 unsecured bond.
De'Edward Glenn was later tried for the murder of Ernest Cameron. After hearing the evidence, a jury found him not guilty, and he was acquitted of the charge. Following the verdict, the case remains unsolved.
