Daquain Blackwell, a 17-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 17, 2017, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The incident occurred when Blackwell was seated in the right front passenger seat of a vehicle with three other occupants, all of whom were known acquaintances. Jabhari Robinson, an 18-year-old male, was seated in the rear passenger area of the vehicle and had a 9mm handgun out.
The gun was accidentally discharged, and Blackwell was struck by gunfire in the back. Despite efforts to save him, Blackwell succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was deemed accidental by the Winston-Salem Police Department. Robinson was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
