Avery Marquavis Ponder, a 22-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on November 17, 2019, in Gastonia, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on West Hudson Boulevard near the Gaston County Health Department. When police arrived at the scene, they found Avery Ponder suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that Avery Ponder
and 21-year-old Jordan Tre Chambers, also from Gastonia, had an argument the day before the shooting. On the day of the incident, they encountered each other while driving in separate cars with different groups of people. During this encounter, Jordan Chambers allegedly shot Avery Ponder, and the driver of Chambers' car fled the scene. Chambers was initially identified as a person of interest and later turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
In addition to Jordan Chambers, another individual, Destynee Woodberry, was charged with accessory after the fact of second-degree murder. The investigation into Avery Ponder's death is ongoing, and the authorities continue to seek information from the public to aid in their efforts. Avery Ponder's family, including his mother, has expressed their grief and relief following the arrest of the suspects involved in his tragic death.
