Jeremy Joshua Lipscomb Jr., an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on December 21, 2020, in Gastonia, North Carolina. Jeremy, affectionately known as "Jay Jay," was the son of Jeremy Lipscomb Sr. and Latoya Sharpe. He attended Bessemer City High School and was a member of Friendly Hill Baptist Church in Lake Wylie.
On the fateful day of December 21, 2020, Jeremy was shot at 214 Mountain View Street in Gastonia.
Despite the efforts of Gastonia Police officers to resuscitate him, Jeremy succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The incident left his family and friends in deep mourning.
Anfernee Latrell Patterson, a 25-year-old African American male, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Jeremy's death. Patterson was accused of shooting Jeremy during an altercation. According to reports, Jeremy had been involved in robbing a drug stash house earlier that day, and someone lured him to the house on Mountain View Street to confront him about the robbery. The confrontation escalated, and Patterson, fearing for his life, grabbed a gun and shot Jeremy.
Patterson's trial revealed that Jeremy was carrying a gun with a laser sight, which Patterson claimed he saw on his body before he fired the fatal shots. The scene was reportedly cleaned up before the police arrived, as multiple neighbors heard gunshots from different firearms, but only Jeremy's gun was found at the scene.
During the court proceedings, Jeremy's mother, Latoya Lipscomb, expressed her grief and urged Patterson to repent for his actions. She emphasized her Christian faith and the importance of forgiveness, asking the court to show mercy to Patterson. Despite her plea, Patterson was held without bond and later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
