On April 26, 1973, Leonard Melvin Lucas, age 50, was fatally shot during a robbery attempt at a store on Carolina Avenue in Gastonia, North Carolina. Lucas had been assisting his wife, who was the acting manager at the store, when the robbery occurred. Despite being a former employee, Lucas often helped his wife during late shifts for safety reasons.
