Nathaniel Newberry, a 30-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on February 28, 2020, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred on Azalea Hills Drive, where Nathaniel was found with a gunshot wound in front of a residence. Emergency services were dispatched following an assault with a deadly weapon report, and Nathaniel was transported to the hospital by medics.
Unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Officers made contact with Tyquis Jenkins, a 27-year-old male, at the scene. Tyquis Jenkins and Nathaniel Newberry were known to each other prior to the incident. After being interviewed by detectives at CMPD Headquarters, Tyquis Jenkins was placed under arrest and charged with the murder of Nathaniel Newberry.
The investigation revealed that the shooting took place in a peaceful neighborhood, which left residents shocked and concerned. One resident, Mushharie Azaz, recounted witnessing the efforts to resuscitate Nathaniel and expressed disbelief that such a crime could occur in their community. The incident happened just minutes before school buses dropped children off in the neighborhood, adding to the distress of the local residents.
