Li Y, a 23-year-old male of Vietnamese descent, tragically passed away on April 23, 2020, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on March 24, 1997, in Vietnam, Li Y was the son of Nhang and Nam Y. His death was a result of a fatal shooting that occurred outside an apartment complex in northeast Charlotte. On that fateful day, Li Y was found lying beside a car on Paces Oaks Boulevard, near East W.T. Harris Boulevard, with a gunshot wound.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department began investigating the case immediately after discovering his body.
For over three years, the case remained unsolved, with no significant leads or arrests. However, in September 2023, a breakthrough occurred when the CMPD identified Joshua Garmon, a 23-year-old African-American male, as a person of interest. Following an interview with detectives, Garmon was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He is currently being held without bond in Mecklenburg County jail.
The investigation revealed that Li Y's death was the result of a robbery gone wrong. Garmon allegedly shot Li Y during the robbery, leading to his untimely demise. The case has garnered significant attention due to the prolonged period it took to make an arrest and the tragic circumstances surrounding Li Y's death.
