The couple was ambushed by unknown assailants who pulled up beside their vehicle and opened fire.
Dondrake was shot in the face and died at the scene, while Jakailah was also shot and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Their young son, who was in the backseat, miraculously survived the ordeal without physical harm but was left traumatized by witnessing the brutal murder of his parents.

The first suspect, Xaveon Dunn, a 22-year-old African American male, was arrested in October 2020. Dunn faced charges related to the murders of Dondrake Blackmoore and Jakailah Jackson. Subsequently, another suspect, Jamaal Porterfield, a 27-year-old African American male, was arrested on November 6, 2020, during a traffic stop in Bluefield, West Virginia. Porterfield was charged with Felony Accessory After the Fact to Murder and was later extradited to North Carolina to face trial.
