Michael Dennis Payne, a 50-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on November 15, 2020, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The circumstances surrounding his death were both shocking and distressing. On the night of November 15, 2020, Fayetteville police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Morganton Road near S. Ingleside Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered Michael Payne lying unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into Michael Payne's death led to the arrest of two suspects: Courtney McClanahan, a 29-year-old white female from Parkton, NC, and Joseph Minacapelli, a 30-year-old white male from Fayetteville, NC. Both suspects faced multiple charges, including felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony possession of stolen property, felony alter/destroy criminal evidence, and felony concealment/failure to report a death. Additionally, Minacapelli was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. The suspects were held at the Cumberland County Detention Center with secured bonds of $200,000 for McClanahan and $527,000 for Minacapelli.
As the investigation progressed, the charges against McClanahan and Minacapelli were upgraded to include first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
