Omar White, a 26-year-old African American male from Virginia, was tragically shot and killed on February 9, 2021, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 11:46 a.m. along the 4800 block of Alamance Road. Omar White was found in a parking lot near a vehicle, having been shot multiple times. He was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Omar White's death led to the arrest of Juan Maddox, a
20-year-old male from Fayetteville, who was charged with first-degree murder. Maddox was apprehended on February 12, 2021, and is currently being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. Another suspect, Myshon Jackson, a 20-year-old male from Broadway, was also charged with first-degree murder but remained at large at the time of the initial investigation.
Further developments in the case revealed that Myshon Jackson was eventually apprehended and faced trial. In February 2024, Jackson, now 22 years old, was found guilty of second-degree murder after a three-day trial and approximately 13 hours of jury deliberation. He was sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison. Juan Maddox, who had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, and an unrelated charge of fraud, testified against Jackson during the trial. Maddox was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison as part of his plea agreement.
The motive behind the shooting was determined to be a poorly planned robbery. According to witness testimonies and evidence presented during the trial, Omar White was shot four times while sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Vue Apartment Homes off Scotland Drive. The autopsy revealed that White had been shot in the face, neck, and twice in the back. Witnesses reported seeing two men running toward a building in the apartment complex immediately after the shooting. Police later located and interviewed Jackson and Maddox but initially released them.
The case also had connections to a kidnapping incident that occurred the day after the murder. Juan Maddox and five others abducted a man at gunpoint, demanding the return of two guns that had been hidden on the day of the killing. During the kidnapping, the victim managed to call 911, leading to the recovery of one of the weapons, a .22 caliber revolver. The other weapon, a 9 mm handgun, was identified as the murder weapon used in the shooting of Omar White. The motive for the robbery and subsequent murder was linked to the retrieval of these firearms.
