Marshayla Urrell Pasley, a 20-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on January 13, 2021, in Greenville, North Carolina. Marshayla was at her home on Long Drive when multiple shots were fired into the residence from outside. She was found unresponsive by deputies from the Pitt County Sheriff's Office and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 3-year-old son was also injured in the shooting but survived after being treated at Vidant Medical Center.
The investigation into Marshayla's death led to the arrest of several suspects. Ja’keis Spencer Wiggins, a 20-year-old male from Snow Hill, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling. Wiggins received no bond on the murder charge and a bond of $2,500,000 on the other charges. Another suspect, Tyquavious Cummings, a 19-year-old male from Greenville, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling. Cummings received no bond on the murder charge and a $1.5 million secured bond on the other charges.
The investigation into Marshayla's death is ongoing, and further charges are expected. The Pitt County Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from the public to aid in the investigation. Marshayla's death has left her family and friends mourning the loss of a young woman whose life was cut short by senseless violence.
