Terence James Russell, a 23-year-old man from Monroe, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on March 1, 2021. The incident occurred on Maurice Street in Monroe, where Terence was shot multiple times. He was rushed to Atrium Union in a personal vehicle but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The shooting was determined to have stemmed from a fight that took place earlier that day at the Monroe Crossing Mall.
The investigation revealed that Terence James Russell, along with
Bryant Russell and an unnamed juvenile, approached a car parked on Maurice Street. They were searching for one of the individuals involved in the earlier fight at the mall. The trio opened the passenger door of the car and attempted to pull the person out. During the struggle, Terence and the juvenile aimed their handguns at the occupants of the car. However, the driver managed to pull out his own handgun and shot Terence multiple times before driving away.
Following the incident, Bryant Russell and the juvenile were arrested. Bryant Russell faced charges of First Degree Kidnapping, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, and Discharging a Firearm Into an Occupied Vehicle. He was arrested in Matthews with the assistance of Matthews PD and was held in the Union County Jail on a $290,000 secured bond. The juvenile was held in a youth detention facility. The driver of the car was not facing charges at the time, but the investigation remained ongoing, and more charges could be filed.
The case also saw another related shooting on Icemorlee Street, where 20-year-old Cameron Jordan Dawkins was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators believed this shooting was an act of retaliation for Terence James Russell's killing. The investigation into the case continued, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
