On July 31, 2022, Yusuff Haamid-Sumpter, a 19-year-old male, was found dead from a gunshot wound at Dickerson Park in Monroe, North Carolina. The Monroe Police Department responded to the scene around 7:45 a.m. and discovered the victim's body. The investigation into his death revealed that he had been shot, and authorities quickly began working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved.
Following the investigation, three suspects were identified, including two juveniles whose
identities were not disclosed due to their age. The third suspect, Mekhi Barrino-Straing, turned himself in to the police on August 4, 2022. All three suspects were charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit a felony. The U.S. Marshals played a crucial role in apprehending one of the juvenile suspects, who was found hiding in a residence in Albemarle.
The Monroe Police Department expressed gratitude to the community members who provided information that aided in the investigation. The police chief emphasized the importance of working with the Union County District Attorney's office to ensure the prosecution and conviction of those responsible for Yusuff Haamid-Sumpter's death.
