DaMari McClendon, a 4-month-old baby boy, tragically lost his life on May 29, 2022, in Monroe, North Carolina. The incident occurred during a family barbecue when an unidentified gunman entered the property and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of DaMari and his father, 25-year-old Darion McClendon. The family was inside the house when they heard the shots, and despite efforts to protect the baby, both Darion and DaMari were fatally shot.
The Monroe Police Department responded to the
scene and launched an investigation into the senseless act of violence. Authorities have been actively searching for the suspects responsible for the shooting, offering a $5000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The community has been deeply affected by the tragedy, and the police department has expressed its commitment to bringing the perpetrator to justice.
In August 2022, a suspect named Tahjii Katrell Salves Bennett, aged 21, was arrested and charged with the double murder of Darion and DaMari McClendon. Bennett is facing two counts of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. He is currently being held without bail.
