Jeremiah Nathaniel Woodard-Pegues, a 16-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on May 13, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred late at night on Allen Street in the Villa Heights neighborhood. Jeremiah was walking towards a corner store when he was approached by a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Tracey Witherspoon.
Witherspoon, who was driving a stolen vehicle, fired multiple shots at Jeremiah, hitting him three times and causing his death at the scene.
The following day, Tracey Witherspoon was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. During the investigation, officers observed a stolen vehicle in the area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop, leading to a high-speed chase that ended with the apprehension of the vehicle's occupants. Witherspoon was later charged with second-degree murder and other related offenses.
In addition to Witherspoon, a juvenile male was also charged in connection with the crime. The juvenile faced charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and discharging a firearm into an occupied property. The investigation revealed that Witherspoon's girlfriend, Takeyah Simpson, was involved in the incident, attempting to lure Jeremiah out of the house before the shooting occurred. Witherspoon ultimately pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 to 19 years in prison.
