On August 3, 2017, Raymond Johnson III, aged 43, was fatally shot while leaving work at a pawn shop on Monroe Road in southeast Charlotte. Johnson was killed by an unknown assailant who fired from a white van. His death marked Charlotte’s 54th homicide of 2017. A candlelight vigil was held to honor his memory, with friends and loved ones releasing balloons and lighting candles. Despite police efforts and surveillance footage capturing his final moments, the case remains under investigation.
