Bruce McLeod, a 33-year-old man from Laurinburg, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on October 17, 2021, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The incident occurred at the Island Flava Restaurant and Lounge on Owen Drive, where an early morning shooting took place. McLeod, along with another individual named Gavin Hale, was shot during the altercation. McLeod was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting incident that led to McLeod's death was not random. According to reports, several people leaving the restaurant got into an argument in the parking lot around 3 a.m. The initial dispute was broken up by an off-duty Fayetteville police officer working security at the venue. However, moments later, gunfire erupted, resulting in McLeod and Hale being shot. The off-duty officer was able to apply a tourniquet to Hale's injury, saving his life.
Cornelius Davis Jr., a 33-year-old man from Laurinburg, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Davis was charged with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was apprehended by U.S. Marshals shortly after 5 a.m. in Saint Pauls. Davis is currently being held at the Cumberland County jail without bail.
In addition to Davis, another individual named Jalen Rashad Everett, 26, was also arrested in connection with the incident. Everett was charged with accessory after the fact of first-degree murder. According to court documents, Everett allegedly arranged for a getaway vehicle after Davis shot McLeod and Hale. The shooting occurred after Davis and McLeod got into a dispute in the parking lot. Davis allegedly struck McLeod on the body before leaving the scene in a black Cadillac Escalade with Everett. Moments later, Davis blocked McLeod and Hale's path with the Escalade and opened fire, striking McLeod in the chest and Hale in the right arm.
The tragic death of Bruce McLeod marked the 34th homicide investigation in Fayetteville for the year 2021. The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing issue of gun violence in the community, with local leaders expressing their concerns and efforts to address the problem.
