On January 29, 2025, Emone Anthony Tyrone McGougan, a 20-year-old Black male from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was fatally shot in the 300 block of Round Tree Drive. Responding officers discovered him with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prior to his death, Emone McGougan was a suspect in the May 2023 murder of 17-year-old Dakota Lee Johnson, also of Fayetteville.
Johnson was found shot on May 18, 2023, in the 2300 block of Indian Creek Drive and later died from his injuries at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. McGougan had been wanted on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and felony conspiracy in connection with Johnson's death.
Following McGougan's death, Fayetteville police identified 21-year-old Khailil Johnson as the suspect in the shooting. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Johnson was considered armed and dangerous.
On February 18, 2025, the Fayetteville Police Department's Homicide Unit and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team arrested Khailil Johnson. He was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in connection with McGougan's death. Johnson is currently being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
Emone McGougan's death adds to the ongoing concerns about gun violence in Fayetteville. His involvement in a previous homicide case and subsequent killing highlight the complex nature of criminal investigations and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing violent crimes in the community.
