Omari Drovon Alexander, a 19-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on November 20, 2021, in Hickory, North Carolina. Omari was a sophomore at Lenoir-Rhyne University and a member of the university's football team. He was found unresponsive in the driver's seat of a black 2015 Chevrolet Camaro with the engine running. Omari had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Omari's death led to the arrest of two suspects.
Quavius Shamond Izard, a 21-year-old male, was arrested on November 24, 2021, in Caldwell County, more than 40 miles away from the crime scene. Izard was found hiding in the back of an SUV and was charged with first-degree murder. He had several other pending charges, including breaking and entering into a motor vehicle and drug-related offenses. Hailee Maureen Melanson, a 20-year-old female, was also arrested and charged with felony accessory after the fact. She was accused of helping Izard escape from the crime scene.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, as authorities have not released any information regarding the reasons for the crime. However, it was reported that hours before the murder, Izard had posted on Facebook about wanting to sell an Xbox video game. Police have stated that Izard did not know Omari, and the connection between the two remains unknown.
In April 2023, Hailee Maureen Melanson entered a guilty plea to the charge of accessory after the fact to murder as part of an agreement with the prosecution. She agreed to testify against Quavius Shamond Izard if called upon by the state. Melanson was sentenced to a minimum of 73 months and a maximum of 100 months in prison. Izard remains in custody, awaiting trial for the murder of Omari Drovon Alexander.
