Roger Dewayne Hoglan, a 49-year-old male from Hickory, NC, tragically lost his life on August 15, 2018. The incident occurred in eastern Burke County, where Hoglan and David Andrew Barnes, a 37-year-old male, got into an argument at a home on Costner Road. According to law enforcement reports, the altercation escalated when Hoglan got into his car while Barnes was standing near the back of it.
Barnes and a witness stated that Hoglan started to back the car up, and Barnes believed Hoglan was trying to run him over. During this incident, Hoglan ran over Barnes' foot, and subsequently, Barnes shot Hoglan. The victim's body was found inside the vehicle.
Following the incident, David Andrew Barnes was arrested and charged with murder. He was held without bond until his first court appearance. The case progressed through the legal system, and Barnes eventually entered a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter in Burke County Superior Court. On March 27, 2023, Barnes was sentenced to a minimum of just over three years in prison, with a maximum sentence of four years and ten months. He also received credit for 210 days of time served.
