Michael Antwon Hemphill, a 46-year-old African American man from Greensboro, NC, tragically died on January 25, 2022. Hemphill was shot on Yanceyville Street after midnight and was found conscious with serious injuries. He was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries on January 31, 2022.
The investigation into Hemphill's death led to the arrest of two suspects. Jonathan Murphy, 38, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
A few days later, John Richardson, 53, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Hemphill's death. The case drew significant attention as Richardson was later linked to additional murders, including those of James Goolsby and Mark Gilbert Jr. The investigation revealed that Richardson had a history of violent behavior and was found with several weapons at his residence.
The community and Hemphill's family have been deeply affected by his loss, and the ongoing legal proceedings continue to seek justice for him and other victims. The Greensboro Police Department has urged anyone with information about the case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
