Troy McKinley Lofton, a 31-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on February 6, 2022, in Wilson, North Carolina. The incident occurred at approximately 3:17 a.m. on the 4200 block of Thistle Drive Northwest. Officers arrived at the scene to find Lofton dead from a gunshot wound. Justice Raquan Lucas, a 23-year-old male, was arrested and charged
with one open count of murder in connection with Lofton's death. Lucas was held without bond following his arrest. Additionally, Lucas faced three felony drug charges: possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, and possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana. Another individual, 25-year-old Dakwon Jocquez Blackston, was charged with acting as an accessory after the fact and was given a $50,000 secured bond.
The case saw significant developments over time. On July 23, 2024, Justice Raquan Lucas was sentenced to 10 to 13 years in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. The plea arrangement was reached during the second day of his jury trial on a first-degree murder charge. Lucas' attorney, Damian Tucker, stated that his client entered an Alford plea, admitting to shooting Lofton after Lofton allegedly pulled a gun on Lucas' friend. Lofton died at the scene after being shot once in the back of his head.
During the trial, testimony from Officer Jack Davies of the Wilson Police Department revealed that he responded to the shooting and found Lofton on the ground, bleeding and unresponsive. Assistant District Attorney John Clark presented body camera footage from the scene, showing Davies discovering a single gunshot shell near the victim. Jamie Lucas, a resident of Wilson, testified that he was hosting a gathering at his Thistle Drive home when an altercation erupted, leading to the shooting. Doorbell camera video and audio were also presented to the jury, capturing the sound of the gunshot but not the actual shooting due to people obscuring the view.
