Jakai Armani Quinta Dekine, a 20-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on June 25, 2022, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Known affectionately as "P-Nut," Jakai was remembered fondly by his community for his kind and respectful nature. His untimely death left a void in the hearts of many who knew him.
On the evening of June 25, 2022, Jakai was shot around 10:45 p.m. near Greenfield and 11th Streets in Wilmington.
Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Wilmington Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the incident.
Three days after the shooting, Malik Delquan Jones, a 25-year-old male, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to Jakai's death. Jones faced several charges, including first-degree murder, and was held without bond at the New Hanover County jail. The arrest was a result of the collaborative efforts of the Wilmington Police Department and the support of the community.
The legal proceedings culminated in August 2024, when Malik Jones was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The trial, which began on July 23, 2024, concluded with the conviction and sentencing of Jones, bringing some measure of justice to Jakai's family and friends.
