Oneal Moore, a 34-year-old African-American man, was the first African-American deputy sheriff for the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office in Varnado, Louisiana. On the evening of June 2, 1965, Moore was driving home from work when he and his partner, David Creed Rogers, were ambushed by individuals in a pickup truck. The assailants opened fire on them, and Moore was fatally shot in the head, dying instantly. Rogers survived but suffered severe injuries, including the loss of an eye.
