Paul Arlynn "Butch" Persigo, a 33-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a dedicated officer with the New Orleans Police Department. On January 7, 1973, Patrolman Persigo tragically lost his life in what became known as the Howard Johnson's tragedy. Over a seven-day period starting on December 31, 1972, a lone gunman named Mark J. Essex, a member of the Black Panthers, waged a violent campaign against the New Orleans Police Department and innocent civilians.
