Deputy Sheriff Jimmy Charles Matthews, aged 43, was shot and killed on April 26, 1982, in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Matthews, who had served with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office for seven years, was responding to a call about a suspicious person when the incident occurred. The suspect, a man with a history of mental illness, opened fire on Matthews as he attempted to look through a window of the residence.
