On Christmas of 1982, the quiet community of Dixie Inn, Louisiana, was shaken by the deaths of 55-year-old Newton 'Newt' Brown and his wife, Erlene. The couple was discovered in their home on Christmas morning by their children, having been fatally shot.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on two recent escapees from the Webster Parish Jail, Jimmy Wingo and Jimmy L. Glass. The duo had broken out of the nearby correctional facility just the day before the Browns were killed.
Law enforcement believed the men had targeted the Brown residence as part of a burglary to aid their escape.
Following their capture, both Wingo and Glass were charged with the murders of Newt and Erlene Brown. Their trials resulted in convictions for first-degree murder, and both men were subsequently sentenced to death.
The legal appeals process ran its course over the next several years. In June of 1987, both Jimmy Wingo and Jimmy L. Glass were executed by the state of Louisiana for their roles in the deaths of Newton and Erlene Brown, bringing a final and somber conclusion to the case.
