Jeffery Mark Gathings, a 23-year-old Deputy Sheriff, was tragically killed on June 19, 1988, in West Carroll Parish, Louisiana. He was working as a dispatcher at the Sheriff's Department when a man entered the jail, shot him, and freed two prisoners. This incident occurred during an escape attempt at the Sheriff's Department.
