In a devastating sequence of events that shattered a Gonzales, Louisiana community, 25-year-old Carla Vessel Miller was tragically killed on March 10, 1999. Her life was cut short by her estranged husband, Shon Miller Sr., in a violent outburst that also claimed the lives of three other people, including the couple's own two-year-old son.
The horror began when Shon Miller Sr.
first went to the home of his mother-in-law, 53-year-old Mildred Vessel, and fatally shot her while she sat in her van. From there, he drove to the New St. John Fellowship Baptist Church, where an evening Bible study was underway. He entered the church, fired shots into the ceiling, and ordered the parishioners to the floor.
Witnesses recounted the chilling moments that followed as Miller walked down the aisle toward his wife, Carla, and their young son, Shon Jr. The little boy reportedly recognized his father and called out 'Daddy.' Miller then shot his wife and son. Before fleeing the church, he also shot and killed a 19-year-old church deacon, Vaniaro Jackson, and wounded four other people.
After a manhunt that lasted for hours, law enforcement located Shon Miller Sr. in a shed not far from the church. As officers closed in, he attempted to take his own life but was wounded by police and apprehended.
Shon Miller Sr. was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and several counts of attempted murder. In June 2000, a jury found him guilty on all four counts of first-degree murder. The jury recommended the death penalty for each count. However, his convictions were later reversed on appeal due to a judicial ruling that prevented him from pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. In a subsequent plea agreement, Shon Miller Sr. pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
