In the quiet of Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, a tragic event unfolded that led to the death of a dedicated law enforcement officer. Detective Charles Randal 'Randy' Smith, a 32-year-old male, lost his life in the line of duty. He had been with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Department for three years, a tenure that came to a violent end.
On that fateful day, Detective Smith and his fellow officers were attempting to serve a search and arrest warrant at a trailer on Point Street in Mamou. The warrant was for a man who had escaped from the parish jail. Upon their arrival, the officers were met with resistance from the suspect's family, who denied them entry into the residence. This prompted the officers to secure the scene and wait for a warrant to be officially sworn out.
Once the warrant was in hand, Detective Smith and another deputy made their move to enter the trailer. As they attempted to breach the home, the suspect opened fire, striking Detective Smith in the chest with a. 380 caliber handgun. Despite his grievous injury, Detective Smith managed to move to the yard of a neighboring property before he collapsed. The suspect continued to fire, pinning down the other officers and preventing them from reaching their fallen colleague.
The standoff reached its conclusion when the suspect emerged from the trailer, still armed. In the ensuing confrontation, the suspect was shot and killed by the officers on the scene. By the time emergency personnel were able to safely get to Detective Smith, he had succumbed to his wound. No arrests were made in direct connection to Detective Smith's death as the sole suspect was killed at the scene. He is survived by his wife and their 10-year-old son.
