Detective Charles Randal "Randy" Smith, age 32, was a dedicated officer with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Department in Louisiana. On April 16, 2003, Detective Smith was shot and killed while attempting to serve a search warrant and arrest warrant on a man who had escaped from the parish jail. The officers had received information that the suspect was hiding in a trailer owned by his family at 213 Point Street in Mamou.
