Latoya Nicole Johnson, a 27-year-old Black female, was a dedicated police officer with the New Orleans Police Department for three years. Her life was tragically cut short on Monday, August 9, 2004, while she was in the line of duty. Johnson, a mother to a 10-year-old daughter, was known for her commitment and courage.
On that fateful day, Officer Johnson and her partner, Officer Summer Turner, were tasked with serving commitment papers at a residence on North Broad Street.
The papers were for a man whose family believed he required a psychiatric evaluation. Upon their arrival, the officers were confronted by the man, who was armed with a handgun.
The situation escalated rapidly when the man opened fire, striking Officer Johnson. After she fell, the assailant stood over her and fired several more shots. Her partner immediately called for backup. Responding officers engaged in a gunfight with the suspect, which resulted in his death at the scene.
The loss of Officer Johnson was deeply felt by her community and the New Orleans Police Department. In the days following her death, an emotional funeral service was held at the city's Theatre for the Performing Arts, where she was honored by city officials, her commander, and her partner for her bravery. The community also rallied to support her daughter, organizing a fundraiser to provide for her future.
