In the small town of Independence, Louisiana, a dispute simmering over rap lyrics tragically boiled over, claiming the life of an innocent bystander. Sandra Butler, a 37-year-old woman, was killed in a drive-by shooting on a Sunday night in early February 2014. Authorities believe she was not the intended target of the violence that erupted.
The shooting was the culmination of an ongoing feud between groups of individuals, with the lyrical content of their music reportedly at the heart
of the conflict. This war of words escalated into deadly violence, and Sandra Butler was caught in the crossfire.
In the days following the shooting, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office moved swiftly to identify and apprehend those responsible. Their investigation led to the arrests of two men. Nineteen-year-old Davontaye Jackson was taken into custody on the Monday evening after the incident. The following day, authorities arrested 24-year-old Verdale Anthony Moore of Hammond. Both men were booked on charges of first-degree murder.
A third suspect, 17-year-old Kenneth Johnson, was also identified by law enforcement. Authorities believed he had fled to the New Orleans area and initiated a search for him. The swift arrests of Jackson and Moore brought some measure of justice to a community shaken by the senseless loss of life.
