In the spring of 2014, a night that should have been filled with the joy of a birthday celebration at the Baker Civic Club in Baker, Louisiana, turned into a scene of tragedy. On March 28, 15-year-old Kendal Dorsey, a male student from Glen Oaks High, was fatally shot. The gunfire that erupted that evening also claimed the lives of 18-year-old Diontrey Claiborne and 15-year-old Marcell Franklin, creating a wave of shock and grief throughout the community.
Another teenager, 19-year-old Javaughn Simmons, was also shot but survived his injuries.
The investigation into the triple homicide quickly pointed to a single suspect, 16-year-old Nakeydran Williams. Authorities determined that the shooting stemmed from an altercation at the party, with investigators believing that the intended target of the violence was actually the surviving victim, Javaughn Simmons. The party, which was attended by approximately 75 to 100 teenagers, reportedly had minimal adult supervision, with only two security guards present. This lack of oversight may have contributed to the escalation of the conflict that ended in bloodshed.
In the months following the shooting, the legal process moved forward. In May 2014, Nakeydran Williams was indicted in the fatal shooting. The gravity of the crime led to the decision that he would be tried as an adult. Faced with the possibility of a lengthy trial and a potential life sentence, Williams's case concluded with a plea agreement in February 2016. He pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter and one count of attempted second-degree murder. The judge sentenced Williams, then 17, to 40 years in prison for his role in the deaths of Kendal Dorsey, Diontrey Claiborne, and Marcell Franklin, and the wounding of Javaughn Simmons. While the plea deal brought a legal conclusion to the case, the families of the victims were left to grapple with their profound loss, with some expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome.
