A family crawfish boil in Baker, Louisiana, took a devastating turn, culminating in the death of 27-year-old Gad Davis on a Sunday evening. The gathering, which should have been a time of joy and togetherness, descended into violence after a heated argument erupted. Davis was a devoted husband and father, remembered by his loved ones for his big personality and kind-hearted nature.
He had a passion for working on cars and stereo systems and was always thinking of others before himself.
The dispute involved Davis, his mother, and her boyfriend, 44-year-old Steven Berthelot. As tensions escalated, Berthelot reportedly went inside the residence on Rolling Acres Drive and armed himself with a handgun. Family members, including Davis, were able to disarm Berthelot initially. However, he managed to retrieve a second firearm from a closet and allegedly fired, striking Davis in the forehead. Davis died at the scene.
In the chaotic moments that followed, Davis's brother is said to have shot Berthelot multiple times in retaliation, leaving him critically wounded. Overcome with distress, Davis's mother also inflicted injuries upon herself but was expected to survive. Berthelot was transported to a nearby hospital where he remained in custody. Following his release from the hospital, Steven Berthelot was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Investigators were still determining whether the brother who shot Berthelot would face any charges.
