Deputy Sheriff Allen Morris Bares Jr., aged 51, was fatally shot on June 23, 2014, while off duty in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. He was investigating two suspicious men when he observed their car crash into a ditch on South Hospital Drive. Deputy Bares called the sheriff's office to report the incident and approached the men to identify himself as a sheriff's deputy. One of the men drew a weapon and shot him.
