In the late hours of an autumn evening in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Hancy Sanchez, a 24-year-old male, was outside his apartment on Bayou Fountain Avenue on October 5, 2014, when he was approached by two individuals. What began as a seemingly innocuous request to use his cell phone quickly escalated into a fatal robbery.
One of the men asked to use Sanchez's phone, and when Sanchez complied, he was then asked for
the password. As Sanchez attempted to get his phone back, the man produced a handgun and shot him in the head. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to the grievous injury. The incident unfolded while Sanchez and a friend, Miguel Cueva-Alvarado, were smoking outside the apartment building. The perpetrators had demanded their cell phones and other personal belongings.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office launched an immediate investigation, which led them to 18-year-old James Mills. He was apprehended at his residence and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and illegal use of a weapon. During the trial, Sanchez's friend, Miguel Cueva-Alvarado, provided crucial testimony, identifying Mills as the shooter. Despite the defense's attempts to challenge the witness's credibility, the jury found Mills guilty of second-degree murder. As a result of his conviction, James Mills was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of his sentence, ensuring that he would be held accountable for the tragic and untimely death of Hancy Sanchez.
