On January 1, 2014, 13-year-old Lee Weathersby III was fatally shot in East Oakland while walking home from a New Year's Eve event at the Boys and Girls Club. He was only two blocks away from his home when he was attacked. Police believe that Lee may not have been the intended target of the shooting. His death marked the first homicide of 2014 in Oakland, deeply impacting his middle school, Alliance Academy. The community, including students and family, later held a memorial to honor his memory.
The tragedy was compounded just 19 days later when Lee's older brother, Lamar Broussard, was also killed. These losses devastated their mother, Dinyal New, who had to mourn the deaths of both of her sons within such a short time frame. Despite police efforts, details regarding the suspects involved in Lee's homicide have remained limited, and the family continued to seek justice for their tragic loss.
