In the early hours of March 28, 2015, the life of 32-year-old Christopher Trent, a local rap musician known as Trinidad, was cut tragically short. An African American man from Rayne, Louisiana, Trent was at a party at the Plaza when violence erupted. Shortly before 2 a.m., he was shot multiple times at the Frog City Travel Plaza on North Polk Street.
Emergency services transported him to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, but his injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them later that morning.
The Rayne Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to two suspects from Lafayette: Aaron Lance Joseph Carter and Kendall John Breaux Jr. In late April 2015, both men were arrested in connection with Trent's death. Carter was charged with second-degree murder, with his bond initially set at $250,000, while Breaux also faced a charge of second-degree murder, with his bond set at a higher amount of $500,000.
The legal proceedings that followed were not straightforward. At one point, Aaron Carter, who was also a suspect in a separate 2018 murder case, had his bond significantly reduced, allowing for his release. However, he was subsequently re-arrested by Rayne police in connection to the murder of Christopher Trent. His new bail was set at $750,000, and he was booked into the Acadia Parish jail. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Christopher Trent's death was described as ongoing, as the community awaited justice for the musician's untimely demise.
