In the Desire neighborhood of New Orleans, a tragic scene unfolded late on a Wednesday night in June of 2015. Inside a residence on Metropolitan Street, 23-year-old Melissa Hunter was discovered on her bedroom floor, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services were called to the home around 10:30 p.m., but upon arrival, they pronounced her dead at the scene.
The New Orleans Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the violent death of the young woman.
Their inquiries soon led them to identify a person of interest. An arrest warrant was issued for Melissa's boyfriend, 25-year-old Kernell Harrell, in connection with the fatal shooting.
The search for Harrell culminated in a standoff with law enforcement. Ultimately, the suspect in Melissa Hunter's death took his own life.
