In the summer of 2015, the life of 23-year-old Corrin Rayford was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. On the evening of Friday, June 19, 2015, Rayford and another young woman, 23-year-old Brandi Gilbert, were discovered inside a parked car on Boone Drive. Both women had been shot in the head. The discovery was made after a resident noticed the vehicle parked on the side of the road with a door ajar and alerted the authorities.
The initial investigation into the double
homicide left police with few leads and no immediate suspects or motives. For over a year, the case remained a painful mystery for the families of the two women, who were both from the North Texas area. Corrin, who was described by loved ones as a person with an infectious smile who enjoyed life and spending time with her family and friends, was laid to rest in Sherman, Texas.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in December 2016, when Baton Rouge police announced the arrest of 23-year-old Jonathan Robertson. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Rayford and Gilbert. Investigators revealed that the killings occurred during an armed robbery. After allegedly shooting both women, Robertson is said to have driven the victims' vehicle to the location where it was later found.
The crucial piece of evidence that led to Robertson's arrest was DNA processed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. At the time of his arrest for the murders, Robertson was already incarcerated in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on an unrelated charge. This critical forensic link provided the connection that detectives had been working to find, finally bringing a suspect to justice for the violent end to two young lives.
