In the late hours of a Sunday in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, the life of 21-year-old Kaleb Gibson of Crowley was tragically cut short. On October 18, 2015, Gibson was fatally wounded in a shooting that occurred at the intersection of North Avenue B and West Second Street in West Crowley. The incident took place around 2 a.m. as a crowd had gathered following the conclusion of the 79th International Rice Festival.
In the chaos, another individual also sustained minor injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led by the Crowley Police Department, with assistance from the Welsh Police Department, quickly resulted in arrests. Within days, authorities had taken 38-year-old Dwight Lee Breaux of Welsh into custody. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. The investigation continued, and soon after, two other suspects were apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting.
Jonathon Breaux Jr., 23, of Crowley, was arrested and charged with first-degree homicide and attempted first-degree homicide. A third suspect, 20-year-old Jermaine Washington Jr. of Welsh, was also taken into custody and faced charges of first-degree homicide and attempted first-degree homicide. At the time of the arrests, law enforcement officials indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that more arrests could be forthcoming. The motive for the shooting was not immediately released to the public as authorities continued to piece together the events of that night. Information regarding the trials, convictions, and ultimate sentences for the accused has not been made publicly available.
