Roosevelt Jones, a 33-year-old man, was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in Oakland’s Uptown district on April 19, 2025. Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. on the 500 block of 18th Street. Witnesses and surveillance footage helped investigators identify a suspect in the case.
Police arrested 33-year-old Jashawndre Upshaw in connection with the killing.
Upshaw was taken into custody on the 2900 block of Brookdale Avenue in East Oakland and booked into Santa Rita Jail without bail. Investigators believe Upshaw shot Jones while attempting to rob him. Alameda County prosecutors later charged Upshaw with multiple felonies, including murder and attempted robbery.
Another individual was also arrested during the investigation, though their identity has not been disclosed. Prosecutors charged this second suspect with several gun-related offenses. The killing of Roosevelt Jones marked the 26th homicide investigated by Oakland police in 2025.
