In a tragic turn of events on a Friday night in the Gardere area of Baton Rouge, a man's attempt to bring peace to his community cost him his life. Charles Barney, a 33-year-old man, was fatally shot outside his apartment on November 13, 2015. Friends and witnesses remembered him as a peacemaker, someone who consistently tried to resolve conflicts and maintain order in his neighborhood.

According to witness accounts, the incident began when Barney approached a group of individuals and asked them to stop selling drugs. An argument ensued, escalating quickly and violently. During the dispute, a man identified as 29-year-old Ronald Joseph allegedly shot Barney. The 33-year-old succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
