In the summer of 2016, a wave of unrest swept across the nation, and in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it culminated in a tragic event that would forever alter the lives of many. On the morning of July 17th, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Corporal Nicholas 'Nick' Tullier, a dedicated law enforcement officer, was ambushed and shot while responding to a call of a man armed with a rifle.
The gunman, Gavin Long of Kansas City, Missouri, had deliberately targeted law enforcement in a calculated attack that also claimed the lives of Baton Rouge Police Officers Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald, and another East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Deputy, Brad Garafola.
The violent encounter left Tullier, a 41-year-old man at the time, with devastating injuries after being shot in the head, shoulder, and abdomen. The initial prognosis was grim, with medical professionals giving him little chance of survival. However, displaying immense resilience, he defied the odds and embarked on a long and arduous journey of recovery. For nearly six years, his father, James Tullier, chronicled his son's courageous battle, sharing updates with a supportive community that rallied behind the family. He endured numerous medical procedures and therapies, fighting through setbacks with unwavering determination.
Despite his incredible fight, the severe injuries ultimately proved insurmountable. On May 5, 2022, at the age of 47, Nicholas Tullier succumbed to the wounds he sustained on that fateful day. His passing was announced by his heartbroken father, marking the end of a nearly six-year struggle that had been closely followed by people across the country. Tullier, who had served the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office for 18 years, was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
The man responsible for the deadly ambush, Gavin Long, was killed by other responding officers at the scene of the attack, meaning no arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The incident was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and left a deep scar on the Baton Rouge community.
