In the early morning hours of October 4, 2016, the life of 32-year-old Brandon L. Washington, a male resident of Covington, Louisiana, was tragically cut short in a motel room. Responding to a report of gunfire at the Green Springs Motel at approximately 3:45 a.m., St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies discovered Washington deceased from a fatal gunshot wound.
The initial investigation quickly pointed to a robbery gone wrong, setting in motion a search for those responsible for this violent act.
Within days, the investigation led to the identification and arrest of four suspects. The first to be apprehended was 27-year-old Terry Hookfin. As the case unfolded, three other men were implicated in the crime: 18-year-old Tyreek Sandifer, 19-year-old Demetri James, and 37-year-old Devin Decoud. According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, the four men had gone to the motel with the intention of robbing Washington. During the course of the robbery, Demetri James fatally shot the victim.
The legal process brought a measure of justice for Brandon Washington. Demetri James, identified as the shooter, was tried and convicted of second-degree murder. He subsequently received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence. His three co-conspirators also faced the consequences of their actions. Terry Hookfin, Tyreek Sandifer, and Devin Decoud all pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter and armed robbery. Their sentences varied, with Hookfin and Decoud providing testimony against James during his trial, which helped secure his conviction. The resolution of the case brought to a close the investigation into the violent and untimely death of Brandon L. Washington, though the impact of his loss continues to be felt by his family and community.
