In the early morning hours of October 28, 2016, the life of 20-year-old Kayn Jontae Deshotel, an African American male, was tragically cut short in his Jennings, Louisiana home. Police received a 911 call around 5 a.m. reporting a shooting on Spencer Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Deshotel inside his residence with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Deshotel's death led authorities to identify two suspects. In November 2016, Thomas Segura and Davon Warren were both arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrests followed an intensive investigation that included the execution of numerous search warrants across multiple parishes. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Warren was already in custody in Lafayette Parish on unrelated drug and weapon charges that stemmed from a traffic stop that occurred just hours after the homicide.
In June of 2018, one of the accused, Thomas Segura, accepted a plea deal. He pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of manslaughter. Following his plea, Segura was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The local district attorney stated that Deshotel's parents were consulted and agreed with the plea agreement. At the time of Segura's sentencing, the charges against the second suspect, Davon Warren, were still pending. Kayn Jontae Deshotel was a graduate of the Jennings High School class of 2014.
